Stockholm—August 11, 2000

The best weather of the short Swedish summer was reserved for the week that Joachim and Elise got married. The ceremony itself took place in St. Jakob's Church, a beautiful church in the heart of Stockholm. The pomp and circumstance was such that a small crowd of Swedes gathered outside the entrance hoping for a glimpse of the Royal Family.

Cape Cod—Saturday, July 1, 2000

Rosa-Emilia Moreno and I [Stefan] drove to Cape Cod from New York in the last rental car on Manhattan, as this was July 4 weekend. Seven hours later, we just made it, a bit frazzled but on time, to a ceremony in a field on an old farm, with a lake as a backdrop. The wedding was a very relaxed affair, as Jennifer and Makram were obviously meant for each other.

Stanford—September 8, 2000
Ben Neaderland writes:

"I am writing to provide my new e-mail (ben.neaderland@stanford.edu) and to give a bit of news Although I never thought it would happen, I have moved to California and am just finishing my first week as a law student at Stanford. While I am sure that I will come to miss the political morass in DC, so far, I am enjoying the good weather, nice, relaxed people, and breadth of topics discussed (i.e. not just politics). Most of all I am relieved to be out of the Pentagon. On the down side, I very conveniently snapped my left achilles tendon playing tennis two weeks before my fiancee, Katherine, and I were to drive across country to CA. I had not intended to spend my first two months in Palo Alto in a cast up to my knee, but I suppose there are worse things."

La Romana, Dominican Republic—June 17, 2000

Rosa's homeland was the backdrop for a beautiful wedding that lured a huge SAIS contingent. Held at a beachside resort, SAISers were surrounded by a wealth of options for activities, from horseback riding to windsurfing to gin and tonic drinking on the beach, and everybody kept on running into everybody.

Banks, Oregon—July 15, 2000

This day had been long in coming, but it seemed to go by in a flash—There were just too many activities: Playing in the tree house, watching or performing a pantomime (UK variety), digging into a whole roast pig, a hotly contested basketball game, catching up with old friends, dancing lessons from Charles Kenny...

Manuel Terranova writes:

"Just got back from Mt. Rainier a week and a half ago. Slept in the crater (at 14,100 feet). Check out the shots ([The cover picture] was taken from the crater lip 14,500 -- you can see our tents in the lower right).
