SIGHS NEWS:
Yes, you're right, there was no May 1999 edition of SIGHS. Hopefully, the June edition will make up for it. In the meantime, however, do suppress your urge to modesty and write in with your over- or under-achievements.

June 5: Stefan Geens, New York

A visit to New York by SAISers Eurof Uppington, Matthew Rose and Marc Young on the occasion of the opening of Star Wars Episode I prompted impromptu drinks at my place. Present was Östen Johansson, who last year got married to Lisa (Susannah Gold's sister), had a baby, and moved to New York.

Asked about Lucia, he proffered several snaps from his wallet, which were whisked to my scanner before modesty got the better of him.

June 1: Louise Ferguson, Hong Kong

Hi Stefan, Hope you are well. I am still here in HK and get most of my news and gossip via Jame and/or the Sighs page.

Enjoy reading your bulletins as well! Would be grateful if you could change the e-mail address for me in the Sighs mailroom to fergusonlouise@hotmail.com

I am close to making a decision about leaving HK and at the moment don't know where I will end up in Europe, so the best address will be the hotmail one. Thanks and take care,

Louise

May 24: Jame DiBiasio, Hong Kong

I have a new e-mail address: dibiasioj@iinewslts.com .

Thanks

June 5: Stefan Geens, New York

My first weekend in May was spent in Dothan, Alabama, where Julia and Zach got married. It brought a rather large group of SAISers to the South and all the charms it offers. Julia's dad and 5 brothers extended an easy-going hospitality; Zach's dad, who presided over the ceremony, gave a remarkable and memorable speech.

May 21: John Gaffney, La Jolla, California

Melinda and I are going to have a baby in September! We know that it will be a little girl, and we're just really excited, as well as a little scared at taking on the responsibilities of parenthood. But we both love little kids and can't wait to meet our new daughter.

If that wasn't enough, we bought a little beach cottage in La Jolla, a little further from the water than where we are now, without a real view, but still walking distance to the beach and a really great and divey fish taco place. Now, the real fun starts: we've got to remodel the kitchen and lay down some wood floors before the baby comes. Our contractor is a pretty laid back California type of guy, but full of ideas we really like, and we think he'll do a great job (he's got good references). So, it's all kind of happening at once.

We managed a fairly quick trip to Provence in late April and early May, hard on the heels of Uta and Tom and Rob. It was really relaxing; since Mel wasn't really up to doing a lot of cycling, we just hiked around those beautiful hilltop villages like Gorde, Rousillon, Lacoste (home of the Marquis de Sade's original castle), and Les Baux (a really amazing place). It was great sampling all the local vins de pays, but Mel found the food a little heavy (not me however, and I've got the extra poundage to prove it, which I'm now diligently trying to work off).

Well any and all emails are welcome at john.m.gaffney@cpmx.saic.com. Thanks again, Stefan for keeping the site so up to date with everybody's news and pictures.

Best, John

[Tom sent in this year's SAIS commencement speech, given by George Soros, and commented:]

"I don't know if you folks saw this, but it is rather sobering, especially for a commencement speech. None of the upbeat, wry, cheeriness of the one attributed to Vonnegut that was floating the internet last year, but I guess these are different times. Also, for those who haven't, you might want to read the article posted on the Sighs webpage by [Sava Tatic,] the Serb who was in school with us.

"Or, maybe it's best that we all just ignore such difficult questions Soros poses, and content ourselves with cheap beer and pizza. Tom"
